Admission to the School

The Governing Body of Chew Stoke Church School is the Admissions Authority for the school and as such is responsible for the admission of all children to the school, with the exception of Reception admissions which are dealt with by Bath & North East Somerset Council. Within the Governing Body there is an Admissions Committee made up of Governors and the Head Teacher and it is the responsibility of this committee to ensure that the school has appropriate admission arrangements in place. Each year the Published Admission Number indicating the maximum number of places available for the September intake of children is published on the school website (please see below). The Governors may review the Published Admission Number at any time. If this is altered, the change will be notified on our school website.

The school has six classes all of which are usually of mixed-age. During your child's time at the school they will spend two years in one of the classes and one year in each of the others. The school runs a two-year rolling curriculum, ensuring that when your child spends a second year in a class all of the learning is new.

The School Admission Arrangements outline the process of application for children starting school in September and for admission to any year group during the year. Information on our over subscription criteria, waiting list and the appeal process can also be found in our Admission Arrangements. The Governors use Bath and North East Somerset Council Democratic Services Department for admission appeals; further information may be found here -

Variation to Admission Arrangements for 2021/22

Due to the current pandemic it has been agreed by the Regional Schools Commissioner that our Admission Arrangements for the year 2021/22 may be varied, as follows:-

To the current oversubscription criteria relating to church attendance the proposed variation for admissions in September 2021, [Year R] as given below:
‘Children who themselves, or whose parent(s) regularly attend a place of Christian worship. Governors expect regular church attendance to be at least once per month for the six month period immediately prior to application (in order to qualify against this criterion, the Supplementary Information Form must be completed)’
Add the following requested variation:
In the event that during the period specified for attendance at worship the church has been closed for public worship and has not provided alternative premises for that worship, the requirements of these [admissions] arrangements in relation to attendance will only apply to the period when the church [or in relation to those of other faiths, relevant place of worship] or alternative premises have been available for public worship.
